The French Revolution Part 1
France was not a happy place before the French Revolution. There were high taxes that were only paid by the Third Estate. That is a class of people that included the very poor and unemployed to the wealthy merchants. Even though the merchants were successful, they paid most of their income in taxes. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were not popular at all because they had extravagant life styles. The people were tired of supporting them. This video sums up what was going on in France during the late 1700s.

Christopher Columbus - Watch animation
It is difficult to tell about these great explorers in 90 seconds or less, but hopefully there is enough information for you to remember.
When we think of these early explorers, you have to think in terms of the time that they were sailing. The world was not seen as it is today. People who lived in Europe and Asia thought that was all there was for the most part.
Now they say that Leif Ericson discovered America way before Columbus set foot on soil in South America. That is probably true, but America did not have what he was looking for at the time.
At the time of the European Explorers, they were seeking to get wealthy. They knew there were people in other places because of the crusades and stories from people who traveled by land. They wanted to make Christian converts and spread the word of Jesus to all the world. Plus, they wanted the fame that discovery would bring.
Columbus went west. The Portuguese were going east. Columbus discovered land thinking that the only land West of Europe would be the Eastern side of Asia or India, not a new land. The Portuguese believed he reached land in Eastern Asia, too.
This belief lasted a long time. Be sure to listen in to the Cinch Cast that will be posted soon to learn more about the civilizations in China and Japan during that time. It is all part of Unit 2.

Vasco da Gama
Vasco da Gama was very interesting. He was not the original choice to continue the journey of Bartolomeu Dias, but fate chose him for the task. His father was chosen, but he died before the journey could begin. Next is brother was chosen, but did not want to lead the expedition. Vasco da Gama was next in line.
Vasco da Gama was born the year that Prince Henry The Navigator died, so he did not know him, yet Portugal was still leading in explorations to the east of Africa and on to India. There might be one or two more animations and more comments about these important events because new worlds were opening up to the explorers during this time.
Let me know if you are enjoying the videos.

Bartolomeu Dias Reaches The Cape Of Good Hope
Italy had the wealthy merchants due to a few things. Marco Polo opened up the Silk Road where merchants could trade for silks and spices with the traders from the East. The Crusades, the wars between the Christians and the Islamic (Muslim)nations also introduced more people to the products from lands that were far from other Western Europe nations.
To get spices and other goods, most of the trade was done with Italy. The prices were very high since there was no competition. Portugal wanted to put the Italian merchants out of business and gain the wealth for their own country.
As you saw earlier Prince Henry, The Navigator, made new advances in explorations by sea possible. Now it was time for the Explorers to find the way to the East.
Bartolomeu was among the first to take the challenge.
Here is the Minute History Video. Please watch and enjoy. Leave a comment, too.

How To Study
Well the Unit 1 testing is closed for Fall Semester 2010, and it seems that everyone could have done better on at least one test. If you did your best, and you want to do better next time, hopefully some of these "how to study" ideas can help you.
If you like to listen to music when you study it is okay, but you should listen to music that is not distracting from what you are trying to study.
I have made up songs for Biology facts to help me learn and remember the material. Can you try making up a song to study? If you do, why not record it on Cinchcast? It is free, then you can give me the link to add to this blog. You might help other students to succeed.
Or perhaps you want to add your own animation? Just send me the link or the embed code if you do.
Remington is here to share some study skills. I hope you enjoy the video.

Prince Henry The Navigator
Portugal lead the way in navigating the West African coast and Prince Henry The Navigator set up a school where he subsidized different fields who were interested in exploration. This included astronomers, ship builders, navigators, compass builders, and people who could create devices for making better ships, and more sea worthy ships.
People came from all over to attend Prince Henry's school and to earn some money, too. Italy supplied several students but they came from as far away as Arabia, too.
Here is a short video I made to help you remember Portugal leading The Age Of Exploration.

CAHSEE Is Today and Tomorrow
What is the CAHSEE test? It is the California High School Exit Exam. Today is the English part and tomorrow is the Math part. Plan on spending at least 3 to 4 hours at school to take the test. It is not timed so relax and take your time.
Be sure to read the questions and know what they want you to do before you choose your answer. There is no hurry to take this test since no one gets out early. You will be there until the last person finishes.
Bring water to drink so you stay hydrated during the test and have some sort of protein for breakfast for brain power.
See you there! We have room assignments at the main entrance. My students are in Room 23 unless you were notified that you are testing in a different room today.
Remember we are giving away season passes to Sea World to those who score 380 or over on both parts! When you pass both parts with 350 or above you get a movie day.
Do your best!
